Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

SYNOPSIS:

Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.

If only it was that simple. Katharine is unable to tolerate the weakest poison, and Arsinoe, no matter how hard she tries, can’t make even a weed grow. The two queens have been shamefully faking their powers, taking care to keep each other, the island, and their powerful sister Mirabella none the wiser. But with alliances being formed, betrayals taking shape, and ruthless revenge haunting the queens’ every move, one thing is certain: the last queen standing might not be the strongest…but she may be the darkest.

I find this book very intriguing. The whole story is creepy,  mysterious and intense. I have been an avid fan of Kendare Blake since Goddess War trilogy. Her writing style suits me, she matches YA Fiction, with a little bit of horror and mystery.  Upon seeing this book on Kendare’s Instagram account, I felt curious given this excerpt from the book;

Three Black witches are born in a glen, sweet little triplets will never be friends.

Three Black witches, all fair to be seen two to devour and one to be queen.

See, it’s quite interesting and catchy. I was devoured by this book. Curiosity made me finish it quickly, I just needed to know who won the crown. The story started with an event approaching where the sisters will display their powers and have the right to kill each other for the throne. It’s literally like inhumane sibling rivalry. The three sisters were separated at adolescence and their memories were obviously wiped-out. Some important characters raised the sisters separately and had been teaching them how to control and use their powers.

The Sister:

KATHARINE, the youngest of the siblings and thought to be a powerful poisoner queen but her powers are seemingly weak, she can’t even ingest the weakest poison

MIRABELLA, the eldest is the strongest of the three. I imagined her like the bad-ass Avatar Korra haha. Manipulates the elements and has many supporters and worshippers.

ARSINOE, the middle child. DGAF about everything else. A potential queen and I’m rooting for her. Her powers is pretty much non existent. She has many friends or supporters including Jules, a very powerful naturalist and a very interesting character.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I gave some aces for the world building and the medieval fantasy setting. I felt like this book is not a boring book, although the action pretty much happened when I was half way through. I really enjoyed it. I also love the plot twist and the unpredictability towards the end. Basically, I was half alive when I finished it. I can’t wait for the next book. I need it right now. This book is completely original, if you wan’t something fresh, something new, something mysterious then read this. It’s all worth it.
